RUMAH Volunteer Roles

Our volunteers that we affectionately call our “Skeleton Crew”, autonomously organize, manage and start projects within the hub! Take a look below to see what the Skeleton Crew is currently nurturing. Anyone is welcome to join and take part. And if you don’t see something you were hoping to see, maybe we can connect you to another organization outside of RUMAH, or, you’re welcome to start your own project with others at the hub!

S.C.R.A.P. is a self defense group inspired by the Warrior Sisters troupe in Eugene, Oregon. SCRAP provides free training to anyone in the community who are comfortable in sharing and holding space for women centered experiences and marginalized voices. These trainings are for those who are rising up in protest, for those who face the threat of violence in their everyday lives, and for those who want to explore tools and techniques for keeping our communities safe. Empowerment self defense trainings seek to provide a range of accessible options for using your body and voice to set boundaries and defend them. Our range of workshops cover situational awareness, the principles of de-escalation, bystander intervention, basic crowd safety, simple physical strikes, protective blocks, and basic defensive maneuvers.

SCRAP will be hosting free self defense classes at RUMAH on the 4th Sunday of each month: at 415 Hillsborough St in downtown Raleigh, Suite 101 with Raleigh’s Self-Defense Collective for Radical Action & Power (SCRAP)!

Pantries & Grocery Delivery

The Pantries crew is a developing group of community members in Raleigh that are looking to prepare, build, and place free community pantries/fridge’s across town in a variety of different ways. RUMAH and Raleigh Food Not Bomb’s Grocery Delivery program are teaming up to make this happen! Currently FNB’s Grocery team operates out of RUMAH along side of other pantries we keep up with such as our free herbal stand through Compassion Access Project and free harm reduction supplies that we offer via NC Harm Reduction. Just at RUMAH alone, there is a mix of free herbal supplies, food/hygiene items, and harm reduction supplies that are in need of regular upkeep. However, one of the dreams the pantry team have are to have the community contribute to these pantries autonomously, leaving things that they don’t need and taking what they do. Join the pantries crew, and take what you need and leave what you can!

The future goals and tasks:

  • Ongoing upkeep with internal Hub’s pantries

  • Upkeep with any future community fridges/food pantries

  • Starting with a pantry space outside of the People’s Warehouse

  • Seeking out other locations for pantries

  • Sourcing fridges and other structures for free pantries

FNB Grocery stock at RUMAH is pictured on the top left. The refridgerator sourced for our up and coming pantry, currently in the works. Bottom right is a view of our herbal pantry we are able to form with regular donations from Compassion Access Project.

And if you’re interested in taking part in Food Not Bombs Raleigh’s Grocery Delivery crew, here are some of their tasks and needs:

  • Drivers for delivery

  • Supply runners to get supplies from stores/donation drop off

  • Packers for groceries

  • Dispatchers for drivers and checking/responding to request forms

  • Outreach for supply drive and PR calls

The Library & Zine Team

This crew manages our library and zine collection! Currently we only allow books to be read in the hub however the team has been working on a borrowing system for the public. Besides organizing the library and zine collection, reading groups are also scheduled and even zine making workshops! We specifically are cultivating and archiving a radical book and zine library for the public to use. Join the team to help complete and continue our library and zine project!

Tasks and Upkeep for this project within the hub are:

  • Printing upkeep to replenish zine rack

  • Printing zines, flyers, and buttons for our tabling events

  • Printing button templates and using button maker to give out free buttons

  • Checking inventory of new and old books in library

  • Upkeep with printers

  • Holding book discussions

  • Zine-making workshops

  • Seeking out books to add to collection

Continue accomplishing the book borrowing system for the library

Hub Staffing & Hub Upkeep

Hub staffing and upkeep is one of the most essential skeleton crews of the hub! Without them we wouldn’t be able to manage and put on the events for the public! Hub staff get trained on use of the space, equipment, opening, closing, and how to facilitate public events going smoothly! Events can range in size from a variety of topics such as musical performances, movie screenings, peer lead support group discussions, educational teach-in, artistic gatherings, and local non-profit meetings. This is a fun task that connects you with the community, direct plug into relationship building, and you can learn a lot from the events! Hub staffing an event can range from 2 to 6 hours of your time, and you can staff with other people to make things easier or to tag team partial staffing to take care of an event. You chose what you want to staff!

(From top to right )These photos are snapshots from events at the hub! From artist gallery collaboration, to our regular Full Moon Circles hosted by local creator Shalice, to a teach-in on history of Genocide in the Congo, to a picture of hub staff being silly after an event, to a show put on for Sorry State 10 year anniversary, and to a creative pumpkin carving gathering!

Regular tasks and needs for hub staffing and upkeep:

  • Signing up and staffing events

  • Setting up the space for events

  • Helping close up or cleaning up after events

  • Keeping tables and counters clean

  • Keeping up with bathroom cleanliness

  • Taking out the trash

  • Notifying the larger crew when something at the hub needs addressing

  • Scheduling “Scrub The Hub” days

  • Supply running for the space such as toilet paper, snacks, water etc.

  • Making sure folks who put on events feel supported and cared for

  • Building relationships and making connections in the community

  • Helping manage the event request form, staffing sign ups and sending email confirmations
